I’ve been active in the publishing world for 2012, working as an author, freelance editor, and I worked with a small press for a couple of years. I have an MA in History and am well versed in the Chicago Manual of Style as well as various writing and research techniques needed to bring your work to the next level.
I strive to support you and your book, and I know the strong connection you have to your story, characters, and voice. All of my suggestions are provided merely to help you grow and improve your final product.
I begin all new clients with a 3000 word sample edit to ensure that our styles are compatible.
A developmental edit is a thorough and in-depth edit of your entire manuscript. It is an examination of all the elements of your writing, from single words and the phrasing of individual sentences, to overall structure and style. It can address plot holes or gaps, problematic characterization and all other existing material.
Cost: $0.008+ per word, depending on analysis of sample edit.
In a copy/line edit, sentences and paragraphs may require reworking rather than whole pages or scenes.
Areas addressed include:
- awkward phrasing
- syntax issues (sentence variety and structure)
- showing vs. telling
- best word choices
- passive verb elimination
- suitable dialogue
- chapter breaks
- timeline consistency
- and more.
Minor fact checking as well as potential copyright issues are also covered. A follow-up proofread by another set of eyes is advised to catch minor errors and formatting issues.
Cost: $0.006 per word
A proofread focuses on proper conventions of sentence mechanics and fixes basic errors in spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. In general, there is no restructuring or re-writing of sentences for clarity. Consistency in formatting is also addressed.
Cost: $0.003 per word
